Academic Year 2007/2008

  • Docente: Diego Savoia
  • Credits: 3
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Biotechnologies (cod. 0090)

Learning outcomes

The objective of the laboratory course is to give the necessary technical-practical knowledge to the students, either in field of the general chemistry, by executing some titrations (redox reaction, buffer power), and especially allowing them to carry out some simple organic syntheses, check the reactivity principles of the main functional groups and understand the mechanisms of some important organic reactions.

Course contents

General chemistry:

- Reduction of potassium permanganate with sodium disulfite

- Determination of the buffer power of the system acetic acid/sodium acetate  by varying the concentration

Organic chemistry:

- Separation of benzoic acid and benzylamine from benzylammonium benzoate

- Reduction of 2-methylcyclohexanone

- Enzymatic reduction of methyl benzoylformate to methyl 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetate

- Oxidation of 1-phenylethanol by manganese dioxide

- Resolution phenylsuccinic acid with proline

- Acetylation of salicilic acid: synthesis of aspirin

- Aldol condensation

Teaching methods

All the experiments of general and organic chemistry  are described in a lecture note, available for the students, reporting the principles of personal behavior and the security rules which the student must follow.

The teacher will be helped by one resercher and a part-time student with proved ability in the organic synthesis. The student will be assisted during the set up of the glass apparatus for the chemical reactions and will be instructed on how to carry out the reaction and finally the isolation (filtration of solid product, extraction with solvent), purification, (chrystallization, distillation) and analysis of the product.

The studente will present a written report for each experiment, in which he will describe the experimental results and the analyses, and at the same time he will answer to some questions present in the lecture note, which induce the operator to understand the need to follow the experimental procedure or the theoretical bases of the experiment.

Assessment methods

Learning will be assessed during the oral examination of the course Organic Chemistry

(integrated course)

Teaching tools

The laboratory of organic chemistry is equipped with hoods, where students work in couple, one hood for each couple. Each bench is equipped with the necessary glassware, instruments and chemical material necessary to carry out the experiments. The course of the organic reactions will be followed, the reaction products identified and their purity checked by the proper analytical methods and instruments, including gas-chromatograph, mass spectrometer, infrared spectrophotometer and polarimeter.
