Bone and articular tissue, Biomaterials commonly usde for the bone tissue regeneration and for bone implants.

Course contents

1.Biomaterials: an introduction.

2. Commercial Materials: an overview

3.Bone tissue: composition, structure, functions.

4.Bone remodelling. Mechanical properties of different bone tissues.

5.Biomaterials for bone substitution and/or regeneration

6.Metals as biomaterials: Co-Cr alloys, Stainless Steel, Ti alloys. 

7.Materials for Total Hip replacement and Total Knee replacement

Corrosion properties, Osteointegration, Degradation Kinetics.

8.Coating of Metallic Biomaterials

9.Bone cements. PMMA-based Cements. Calcium phosphates-based cements.

10.Scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration: materials, performances and production methods.

11. Tissue engineering

12. Biomaterials as drug delivery systems.

13.Biocompatibility. In vitro preliminary tests performed on different biomaterials.
