Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to know the basic elements of the economy of renewable resources with particular reference to the issues related to the economic system of fishing. The student will have the skills to evaluate with an interdisciplinary approach the main phenomena related to the structural, environmental and market conditions of fishery products and to apply the basic tools for analyzing the economic management and forms of intervention of the fisheries policies.

Course contents

The student who accesses this teaching is in possession of a good preparation in the fundamentals of mathematics and marine biology. He knows also the fundamental relationships between marine resources and fishing practices.

The course consists of two modules:

Module 1: Fishery economics

Module 2: Fishery policy

Module 1:

1. Fishing in the framework of the economy of renewable resources
The natural resources. Fishing and environmental features. Analysis of prices, costs and market structure. The relationship between supply and demand. The natural resources. Fishing and environmental features. The sustainable development of the fisheries sector. Stocks, catches and fishing effort.

Production function and bio-economic equilibrium.

2. Externalities and property rights
The natural resources group
Excludability and rivalry of the natural resources group
Externalities techniques and pecunarie

Evaluation of ecosystem services
The rights of ownership in the management of fishery resources

3. Fishery Management
The control measures the output: catch limits
Measurements of input control: limitation of licenses
Technical measures: restrictions on the size and the mesh of the nets, the biological rest periods.

Teaching methods

The course will be examined and discussed some case studies on the management and policy of the fisheries sector.

Assessment methods

The exam takes place only through the final exam which ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills expected by conducting an oral examination. This is an assessment of the ability to display and interpretation of the matters and the enforcement capabilities of the analysis tools in the relationship between instruments and methods of intervention in the management of the fisheries sector.
