Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Docente: Piera Sabatino
  • Credits: 8
  • Language: Italian
  • Moduli: Piera Sabatino (Modulo 1) Francesca Soavi (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Biological Sciences (cod. 8012)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able to possess the basic chemistry knowledge and apply them to problem solving. Students should also acquire the adequate scientific language and understand chemistry as an interdisciplinary science, particularly useful in biology.

Course contents

Chemistry: matter and measurement. Atoms, molecules and ions. Formulas, equation and moles. Periodicity and atomic structure. Ionic bonds and some main-group chemistry. Covalent bonds and molecular structure. Reactions in aqueous solution. Thermochemistry: chemical energy. Gases:their properties and behaviour. Liquis, solids and phase changes. Solutions and their properties. Chemical kinetics. Aqueous equilibria: acids and bases and their applications. Thermodynamics: entropy, free energy and equilibrium. Electrochemistry.

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures will be given and  typical general chemistry problems will be solved together.

Each student can practice problem solving by using adequate PC tests.

Laboratory experiences will be focused on the main study subjects.

Assessment methods

Both written and oral exams will evaluate the students ability on theoretical and practical knowledge in the course subject.

Teaching tools

PC and videoprojector for Powerpoint presentations of  each subject. Laboratory experiences.
