Learning outcomes
To become acquainted with basic and fundamental knowledge concerning astronomical data acquisition, handling and reduction.
Course contents
Basics of photometry: apparent and absolute magnitude definition, photometric systems, color index, athmospheric absorption.
CCD. The sampling problem.
Standard reduction of CCD images.
Measuring magnitude on CCD images. Photometric calibration. Photometric errors.
Monodimensional spectra extraction from CCD images. Wavelength calibration and spectrophotometric calibration.
Fourier transforms of CCD images.
Readings/Bibliography
Howell S.B.: Handbook of CCD Astronomy, Cambridge Univ. Press.
All the lecture slides which are available at the teacher personal home page (http://137.204.68.26/paola/didattica/AA2017-2018/tada/)
Teaching methods
To make clear to students each new concept introduced several problems are proposed, discussed and solved, letting the students try to find the right solution.
The well known and largely used software for astronomical data reduction and analysis IRAF is used to perform practical application of what has been taught in the lectures
Assessment methods
The examination is oral and lasts, on average, from 40 to 60 minutes. About half of the examination may concern a subject chosen by the student. The remaining half is expected to be a couple of questions (or exercises) concerning subjects which have been taught in the course.
Teaching tools
Video Projector and PC.
