Centro Interfacoltà di Linguistica Teorica e Applicata «L. Heilmann»

Founded in 1971 by Luigi Heilmann as the first University linguistics centre in Italy, CILTA has been involved in language  teaching and in the field of theoretical and applied linguistics research for over thirty years.

At CILTA modern language courses are provided to students and the university’s teaching and non-teaching staff, together with Italian language courses addressed to foreign students who enrol at the University of Bologna or take part in the interuniversity exchange programs – Erasmus or Leonardo.

In the field of linguistics research, CILTA is particularly committed to the fields of the e-learning and  corpora linguistics. In addition, the Centre has organised language skills assessment tests at the language laboratory, in compliance with the university reform  law, since the academic year 2001/2002.

On a six-month basis, the CILTA organises language courses in French, English, German, Spanish, Arabic and Hindi each lasting 50 hours, going from the beginners to the advanced levels. Classes are taught by native language teachers with no more than 20 students per class.

CILTA also offers all of the university’s Faculty students the chance to get ready for their language skills assessment tests in an independent, self-organised way by using the language centre. This centre hosts the language testing for English, French, Spanish, German and Italian at A2 (beginners), B1 (intermediate) and B2 (upper-intermediate) levels, depending on the requirements set by each individual Faculty.

Since the academic year 2004/2005, CILTA has also started to provide experimental  e-learning courses for Chinese and Japanese.

The research activity at CILTA chiefly focuses on the applications of the corpora linguistics, both in the building of text corpora and in their analysis. Over the last few years this activity has led to the setting up of two important corpora: CORIS – the Corpus of the Written Italian Language, and BOLC – the BOnonia Legal Corpus.
