The Department of Sociology, firmly retains the autonomy of each individual instructor and researcher belonging to the department, promotes and coordinates, at the University of Bologna, the research activities in the sectors of relevant competence and relative sectors to the divisions of research activities within the Department:

- Cultural , cognitive and formative Processes
- Social and Cultural Anthropology
- Political Sociology
- Urban and Rural Sociology and Regional Planning
- Labour, Industrial, and Economic Sociology
- Social Problems with special reference to criminality and deviance, with the contribution of Social Psychology
The department organises the structures, manages the branch offices and the means assigned to it for research in the sectors of its competence.
This relates to the teaching activities with specific structures such as computer laboratories, visual halls, library and informational and student orientation office, in collaboration with the Degree Course Councils involved with the Faculty of Political Sciences in
Bologna.
