Fund Raising

Teaching activities, research, scholarships and grants, services and the logistics of the university are also financed by private benefactors who with an act of generosity donate part of their patrimony to the University of Bologna.

The names of individual people, associations, foundations, single entrepreneurs and commercial firms have for many years been associated with the University of Bologna, contributing in this way to scientific progress and favouring the development of research and teaching activities, or giving the possibility to students and graduates who are particularly worthy or in need of financial aid to continue their studies.  There are different ways to fund the University: with an act of generosity (donations, legacies, bequests) or by promoting the activities of the Organisation or company involved (sponsorship, patronage).

Donation
It is an act of generosity made by a private person; the will to donate is expressed in a letter of intent which is followed by the University’s acceptance and the stipulation of the notarial act.  If the donation is of a modest amount the notarial act is not necessary.
For donations addressed to structures which are autonomous from an administrative-accounting point of view (e.g. Departments, Decentralised Campuses) for amounts up to Euro 100,000 there is a simplified form of acceptance.

Legacy
It is possible to state in a will that certain assets, movable or immovable, must go to the University of Bologna, and the testator can specify the use that must be made of said bequest.

Bequest
It is possible to name the University ofBologna as universal heir in one’s will; the bequest can be for free use (the university shall decide how to use it for institutional purposes) or binding (for the purpose established by the testator).

Foundations
The testator can set out that the heir is bound to establish a foundation with its own legal identity and its own patrimony.
In order to execute said testamentary dispositions, over the years the University has set up various foundations, the most recent being the Fondazione Luisa Fanti-Melloni for research in cardiology and grants in said field.

Sponsorship
This is an amount disbursed by a Public Body to the University, in line with the institutional objectives of the paying Body.

Activities and results
Thanks to the generous amounts received, the University can broaden and develop its activities and consolidate its ties with companies and civil society.
In many cases the development of scientific research starts from or is favoured by a bequest or a donation or by the structures, equipment and laboratories created with said funds.
Thanks to the acts of generosity of the donors, students and graduates have the possibility of obtaining scholarships and grants which are published in the University Portal in Italian.
