The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature was founded in 1995 from the merging of the degree courses in Modern Languages and Literatures of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy with the course in Education Science. The Faculty building is situated in via Filippo Re 8, in a modern and lively univeristy area.
Each year the Faculty has over 2,000 fully registered students, among whom 200 students coming from all over the world who are attracted by the prestige and the international character of the University of Bologna. As a matter of fact, this University and, in particular, our Faculty have launched a large number of international projects and programmes with other foreign universities.
For the students of Foreign Languages and Literature the foreign study opportunities are numerous. Thanks to the 200 or so scholarships made available by the Erasmus and Leonardo programmes, students can study in 91 European and non-European (North and South America, Asia, Oceania) universities, while other special programmes provide financial help for research placements abroad for the purposes of writing up their final degree paper. Mobility towards foreign universities does not just involve students but teachers and researchers as well.
The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature is essentially oriented towards the humanities, in which the study of languages blends in with the literary, cultural and historic areas. The teaching provision is organised into two first cycle degree courses in Foreign Languages and Literature and in Asian Languages, Markets and Cultures, starting from the academic year 2005/2006, and into the following second cycle degree courses: Modern, Comparative and Post-colonial Literatures; Languages, Society and Communications; Italian language and culture for foreigners.
The languages and the literature study courses started up so far are Anglo-American, Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Finnish, French, Japanese, English, Spanish-American, Norwegian, Dutch and Flemish, Persian, Polish, Portuguese and Brazilian, Russian, Spanish, German, Hungarian and Yiddish. The sheer cultural and linguistic variety of this teaching provision tries to satisfy the demands of today’s job market which is becoming increasingly globalised. This has always been at the top of the Faculty’s priorities.
After graduating, the job opportunities available are mainly oriented towards the areas of teaching, translating (especially in the literary field), journalism, communications, publishing, tourist and company PR, international organisations, local institutions, cultural institutes, and the Diplomatic and Consular offices.
The Information Centre of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature is represented by the website http://www.facli.unibo.it, which is regularly updated and open to receiving your comments and suggestions.
Apart from Faculty and University life, living and studying in Bologna is a stimulating and constructive cultural experience thanks to the progressive expansion the city has experienced over the last years. This gives students the chance to combine university studies with cultural excursions to local museums, libraries and other temporary events, exhibitions and conferences regularly held in Bologna.
Bologna - the "Young People’s City " has lots to offer, not only as concerns education. One’s leisure time is important as well: after a hard day’s study, students can find entertainment at a large number of cinemas, cafeteria’s and discos, which offer cut-price admissions to students, and regularly hold international events, original language films along with other cultural events.
