Short biography
He attained a degree in Biological Sciences at Bologna University in 1971. Assistant Professor of Human Physiology at the Human Physiology Institute of Bologna University between 1971 and 1983 and Associate Professor of General Physiology at the Human Physiology Institute of Bologna University between 1983 and 1986. Full Professor of General Physiology since 1986 at the Department of Human and General Physiology of Bologna University.
Author of over a hundred scientific publications in the field of vision Neurophysiology. His major scientific findings concern the study of the brain mechanisms for motion and visual space coding as well as the control of visuomotor activity in man and in non-human primates.
He has held various scientific conferences and seminars at Conventions and International Schools and in many Research Centres in Italy as well as abroad. He is a member of the Italian Physiology Society, of the Italian Society for Neuroscience, of the International Neuropsychological Society, the European Biomedical Research Association, the European Brain and Behaviour Society, the Vision Sciences Society and the American Society for Neuroscience.
He has supervised research carried out in the framework of University-funded projects with CNR, PRIN and CEE funds.
He was awarded the "Golden Brain Award 1997" by Minerva Foundation (Berkeley, California, USA) "for pioneering discoveries of the function of the visual brain".

Posts held
He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Physiology Society and of the Scientific Supervisory Body of Bologna University. In 2004 and 2005 he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Bologna University. He has held, and still holds, posts in national and international scientific committees. He coordinates the PhD Degree Course in Neurophysiology of Bologna University. He is a resident member of Institute of Advanced Study and of the Bioethical Committee of Bologna University.
