Centralised Veterinary Service

This Service deals with protecting the animals used for experimental purposes and other scientific projects in all the University institutes that carry out experiments on animals.

The Centralised Veterinary Service (SVC) is based at the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and is responsible for the protection of the animals used for experiments and other scientific projects in all the University institutes that perform experiments on animals in compliance with and pursuant to Italian Act of Parliament no. 116 passed on  27th  January 1992 (which is the enforcement of EU Council directive 86/609/CEE, dated 24 November 1986).

The Service controls the life and health conditions of animals in order to prevent lasting injury, pain and unnecessary suffering.

Moreover, the Service makes sure that the experiments are  carried out correctly, after which it decides whether the animal can be kept alive or has to be put down; the Service decides to have the animal put down when it finds the animal to be in
conditions of permanent suffering or pain, or when it is impossible to keep the animal life in a good state of health.

The Service guarantees a veterinary and assistance service to all University institutions, as well as a consultancy service concerning animal health conditions.

The Service comprises a committee made up of:

  • Director: Prof. Stefano Cinotti (Veterinary Physician and Legal Consultant)
  • Fellow: Prof. Antonio Venturini (Veterinary Surgeon)
  • Fellow: Prof. Andrea Formigoni (Zootechny Expert)
  • Fellow: Dr. Pier Attilio Accorsi (Ethologist)
  • External collaborators: Dr. Giuseppe Cascio
    Dr. Alessandra Buonacucina
