About us

The Faculty of Education Sciences was founded in 1996, when it replaced the School of Education. The new teaching set-up comprises a 3-year first cycle degree course and a 2-year second cycle degree course (as well as postgraduate doctorates and masters degrees). The Faculty was  inaugurated in the academic year 2001-2002 to meet the requirements set by the reform of the Italian university system.

The Faculty’s cultural and scientific vocation is – by means of its contribution to research in the field of education sciences (e.g. in the studies of a  pedagogical, psychological, sociological, anthropological and educational nature) – to put education (both in schools and as concerns the life-long learning dimension) at the top of its agenda.

In this period of transition and change (the passage from the 20th century to the new millennium, from modern to post-modern times, from nationalism to globalisation), there is a general awareness that education represents a social and economic resource, as well as a cultural and human resource that all countries over the world should possess.

The Faculty’s new teaching provision includes an array of 3-year first-cycle degree courses (two degree courses are aimed at further education studies, while four of them are addressed to training socio-educationists); there are also 2-year second cycle degree courses (three courses altogether, beginning in the upcoming academic year).

In particular, the first-cycle degree courses are based on the following academic progressions:

  1. Degree courses aimed at the training of educationists and teachers awarding a vocational degree -  a 4-year course for primary school education - which entitle graduates to teach in nursery schools or crèches (early infancy; babies and toddlers aged from 0-3) and that train professionals who are specialised in child-caring or child-minding; nursery schools (infants aged 3-6)  and for primary schools (primary school children aged 6-11).
  2. The degree courses aimed at the training of socio-educationists for non-scholastic organisations (cultural and professional centres, rehabilitation, environmental and sports institutes/organisations, etc.) and for post-school education institutes (permanent, recurrent, and continuing education) award qualifications in the following four areas:
cultural operator/expert in education science, professional educator;  trainer.
