Getting to know Chemistry

In 1998 the "Getting to know Chemistry" Committee was established through the desire of a small group of people to convey their passion for Chemistry.

Getting to know Chemistry

Today many young researchers, PhD students and university students are part of the executive body of the committee and they all share a desire to diffuse scientific culture.

A few years ago, at the "Giacomo Ciamician" Department of Chemistry of the University of Bologna, Chemistry took on a new form, and today is amazing and fun. Why? Nowadays, due to continuous media attacks, Chemistry does not enjoy a good reputation. In people’s minds, chemistry is associated with something negative and "dirty", something useless and harmful (pollution, environmental disasters and more). Chemistry is also considered a difficult, abstract and sometimes even abstruse school subject.

The objective of the committee is to demonstrate in a scientifically rigorous yet fun way that chemistry does not deserve its bad reputation: in fact, chemistry has played a decisive role in the scientific and technological development of our civilisation and therefore ultimately in the improvement of our quality of life.

Chemistry is part of our daily life. It surrounds us, it manifests itself in natural phenomena and it is ready to meet our needs with all the new and useful things that chemists create; chemistry is also inside us because our body is made of atoms and molecules and it works by exploiting extremely complicated chemical processes.
