Procedures and deadlines for Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) and to Laurea Magistrale a ciclo unico (Single cycle degree/Combined Bachelor and Master - 300/360 ECTS) for non-EU citizens resident abroad.
For these citizens, every study programme sets an annual quota of places available for non-EU students. To request pre-enrolment for a programme, citizens should contact the Italian Embassy-Consulate in the student's country of residence (only in exceptional cases may students contact the Embassy-Consulate offices of a third country and in such cases the head of the Embassy-Consulate offices can refuse the application). Application deadline is established annually by Ministry.
For the accademic year 2011/2012, applicants must hand in to the Italian diplomatic rappresentation the following documents, from 23 May 2011 to the deadline established by single diplomatic authorities:
- the original final diploma of secondary studies (which will be returned to the student once validated)
- a certificate attesting that the University entrance examination in the country of origin has been passed
- any other certificates relating to academic studies partially completed (exams passed and official documentation regarding examination programmes).
These are required to shorten programmes of study (admission to a year other than first year) or to complete the compulsory 12 years of schooling required for admission to Italian Universities.
- a post-secondary academic qualification gained at a Higher Education Institute that is not a University, in cases where the diploma of secondary studies has been gained following a period of less than 12 years of schooling.
- two photographs
Students need to obtain the following documents form the Italian Embassy-Consulate offices abroad:
- authentication and translation of the final diploma of secondary studies (this must be done by the Italian Embassy-Consulate offices in the country where the school that issued the diploma is based, if this is different from the student's country of residence)
- declaration of the value of the final diploma of secondary studies (this must be done by the Italian Embassy-Consulate offices in the country where the school that issued the diploma is based, if this is different from the student's country of residence)
- authentication of one of the two photographs brought by the student.
Documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by an official translation in Italian; the translation must be obtained by the student and must be certified by the relative Italian Embassy-Consulate offices abroad. Students who are already in Italy can contact official or sworn translators, or the Embassy-Consulate offices of the document's country of issue, or the appropriate local court office.
To be admitted to a programme a student must pass an Italian language proficiency test, a cultural test (if in his/her country access to University is restricted), and may also have to pass an admissions test to programmes with a limited number of places as well as other tests required for Italian citizens.
Students with the following qualifications are exempt from taking the Italian language proficiency test:
- second level secondary school qualification obtained following four or five years of study at Italian schools abroad, or one of the secondary school final qualifications described in annex 2 of the provisions of the MIUR Memorandum.
- certificate obtained in conjunction with a school diploma from Argentina that certifies that the programme included an Italian language course for at least 5 years
- diploma in Italian language and culture from the University for foreigners of Perugia and Siena, obtained after a course of at least one academic year
- Italian language proficiency certificates equivalent to levels C1 and C2 of the Council of Europe issued by the III University of Rome and by the University for foreigners of Perugia and Siena, also issued in agreement with Italian cultural institutes abroad; certificates of attendance issued by other Universities that have set up programmes in accordance with art. 46 paragraph 3 of Presidential Decree 31/08/99 no.394, and issued in agreement with other training institutes, local bodies and regions.
Students with the following certificates are exempt from the Italian language proficiency test, however admission in this case is determined by the number of places assigned for foreign citizens:
- Italian language proficiency certificates equivalent to levels not lower that B2 of the Council of Europe issued by the III University of Rome and by the University for foreigners of Perugia and Siena, also issued in agreement with Italian cultural institutes abroad.
- on the basis of independent decisions by individual universities, students with certificates of attendance issued by other Universities that have set up programmes in accordance with art. 46 paragraph 3 of Presidential Decree 394/1999. Students with said certificates are not exempt from the test at the University of Bologna.
Non-European Union students resident abroad who come from countries where Universities have a limited number of places, have to sit the cultural test.
The date of the Italian language and culture test is 1st September 2011. To be admitted to the test, on the day of the test itself the student must show his/her passport and entry visa for study reasons or his/her residence permit, or the receipt issued by police headquarters for application for the residence permit. A candidate waiting for the residence permit shall be admitted to the tests with reserve.
Students can enrol only once they have passed the tests.
Enrolment for the University of Bologna can be done on-line, by going to the site www.almawelcome.unibo.it, or students can go to one of the several Almawelcome points, where they can find assistance and information.
To be able to use the on-line service, students must be in possession of a codice fiscale (tax registration number).
For students abroad, this tax registration number can be applied for at the Italian Embassy-Consulate offices.
For students already in Italy, this tax registration number should be applied for at the local Tax Agency Office.
The student enters personal data on the site and chooses the intended study programme. The system assigns a matriculation number and it is then possible to print the matriculation application. Payment of the first instalment of the registration fee can be made on-line or else at any branch of the UniCredit Bank, by presenting a code downloaded from the Almawelcome programme. After payment has been made, the student signs the matriculation application and brings it to one of the Almawelcome points together with a copy of his residence permit or the receipt issued by the Questura confirming that a residence permit has been applied for.
In the event of a notification by the Italian Questura – requested by the University – of a rejection procedure the applicant’s enrolment will be cancelled.
Upon enrolment, the student will be given the University the magnetic card giving access to University services.
Students who have passed the Italian language test but not entering the reserved share shall have the possibility of applying for the "re-assignation" to another degree programme with posts still available within the University of Bologna or to another Italian university.
For the academic year 2011/2012, the procedure of re-assignation shall take place on October 18, 2011. Further information, please refer to the Student's Registry Ofice of the relevant Faculty
