All the information required to non-EU citizens (resident abroad) about the modalities and the deadlines to enrol to Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master - 120 ECTS) for which a first-cycle degree is a prerequisite.
For non-EU citizens (resident abroad), each degree programme provides for an annual share of reserved posts. To apply to the pre-enrolment to a specific degree programme, applicants must turn to the Italian representation in the Country of residence (only on an exceptional basis, applicants can turn to the Italian representation in a third-party Country, but in this case the director of the representation may reject the application). The terms for the application are annually fixed by the Italian Ministry.
For the academic year 2011/2012, applicants must hand in to the Italian diplomatic representation the following documents, from 23 May 2011 to the deadline established by single diplomatic authorities:
- Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) obtained at any University
or, alternatively,
- a post-secondary qualification obtained in a non-university Higher Education Institute allowing for the continuation of the university studies in the subsequent level, but provided that the secondary school diploma was attained after at least a 12-year education;
- certificate released by the relevant academic institution - as duly signed by the diplomatic authority - assessing the passed exams as well as the detailed programmes and time plan devoted to the teaching and laboratory activities provided for each subject area, for the purposes of the qualifications as for point 1 and 2;
- two photographs (of which one must be authenticated by the relevant Italian representation).
- the "Diploma di lingua e cultura italiana", obtained at the University for Foreigners of Perugia or Siena, at the end of a study programme of at least 1 academic year or any other Italian language certificate, released by one of the following university institutions:
Roma Tre University,
University for Foreigners - Perugia,
University for Foreigners - Siena,
Non-public University for foreigners (legally recognized) "Dante Alighieri of Reggio Calabria", and any other "Dante Alighieri" Institute,
including Italian language certificates from the same universities if released abroad under special agreements with the Italian Cultural Institutes or other equivalent entities,
or attendance certificates released by other universities having set up language courses pursuant to Art. 46, paragraph 3, of D.P.R. August 31, 1999, n.394, also under a special agreement with other educational, local or regional institutions.
All applicants may directly turn to the above said universities, including the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad, to learn how to obtain such certificates.
At the Italian diplomatic representation, applicants must require:
- the authentication and translation of the first cycle degree certificate (both procedures must be carried out by the Italian diplomatic representation in the Country which the school/university/institute releasing the certificate belongs to);
- declaration of legal value for the degree certificate (both procedures must be carried out by the Italian diplomatic representation in the Country which the school/university/institute releasing the certificate belongs to);
- authentication of one of the two photographs.
The documents written in a foreign language must be handed in the original copy together with the official translation into Italian; the translation is a responsibility of the applicant and must be certified by the relevant Italian diplomatic representation abroad.
The translation may also be carried out in Italy by official translators or by the diplomatic representation operating in Italy of the Country where the document has been released.
Translations of the "programmes of the university exams" passed, if these are written in English, French, German, Spanish, are not required.
The documentation handed in by the applicant does not allow for a direct access/admission to Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master), as the University must also assess if the degree/diploma/certificate owned by the applicant can qualify for the application.
At the University of Bologna the assessment of the degree qualification is assigned to the relevant Degree Programme Boards, which apply the same criteria (curricular requisites and evaluation of the personal preparation) provided for the holders of the equivalent Italian academic degree.
For applicants having a foreign degree/diploma/certificate, the assessment of the curricular requisites shall include the evaluation of the programmes of the exams passed abroad, which have been attached to the pre-enrolment application.
If the degree/diploma/certificate does not qualify for the admission/access to Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master), non-EU citizens - if already in Italy with a short-term stay permit for study reasons - must return to his/her home Country by the end of the stay permit.
The admission to other degree programmes (Laurea - First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) is not allowed, as the terms provided for the enrolment procedures are not always coincident.
In order to be admitted, the applicant shall be asked to pass an Italian language test.
In addition, he/she must pass any other tests provided for the admission to the selected degree programme (admission test to the degree programmes with restricted access, or other proficiency tests, where required).
The admission to the Italian language test and to any other admission tests shall be notified for each applicant by the University to the relevant diplomatic representation, including details about the date, time, seat and modality of execution.
The relevant diplomatic representations shall then issue a valid visa for Italy for study reasons to those who must pass the Italian language test and any other admission test where required.
Within 8 days upon his/her arrival to Italy, the admitted student must apply for a stay permit for study reasons at one of the authorized Italian postal offices.
The Italian language test for the academic year 2011/2012 is fixed for September 1, 2011. In order to be admitted, on the day of the test execution, the student must hand in a valid passport and visa (released for study reasons) or the stay permit; or the certificate/receipt issued by one of the authorized Italian postal offices, in which the application to the stay permit is registered. The applicant waiting for the issue of the stay permit is admitted to any admission test but with due reserve.
The applicants for whom the access requisites have not been assessed yet shall be admitted to the test with reserve; any limitation shall be removed upon the positive assessment of the degree/certificate/diploma by the relevant degree programme board (or delegate lecturers).
Holders of the following certificates shall be exempted from the passing of the Italian language test and are automatically enrolled to the degree programme (out of the reserved share):
- the"Diploma di lingua e cultura italiana" obtained at the University for Foreigners in Perugia or Siena at the end of a study programme;
- Italian language certificates corresponding to levels C1 and C2 (according to the European Council's specification), released by Roma Tre University, the University for Foreigners in Perugia or Siena, "Dante Alighieri" Institute or the non-public (legally recognized) University for Foreigners "Dante Alighieri of Reggio Calabria", also under a special agreement with the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad;
Holders of the following certificates are exempted from doing the Italian language test but are however submitted to the share limit reserved to foreign citizens:
- Italian language certificates corresponding to levels not inferior to the B2 level (according to the European Council's specification), released by Roma Tre University, the University for Foreigners in Perugia or Siena, "Dante Alighieri" Institute or the non-public (legally recognized) University for Foreigners "Dante Alighieri of Reggio Calabria", also under a special agreement with the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad.
Students having passed the Italian language test and having access to the degree programme share shall also be entitled to participate into any other admission tests, where required, and, in the absence of these tests, shall be able to directly enroll to the degree programme selected.
The enrolment of students to the University of Bologna programmes is carried out online by visiting the Website Almawelcome.
To access the online service, applicant must have a taxpayer's code.
For those who are still abroad, the taxpayer's code must be asked at the Italian diplomatic representation.
For those who are already in Italy, the taxpayer's code must be asked at one of the offices of the "Agenzia delle Entrate" (Italian Tax Authority).
After entering and selecting the personal data and the degree programme, the system automatically assigns an enrolment code and it allows to print the enrolment application form.
The payment of the first installment of the university tuition fees may be carried out online or at one of the branches of UniCredit Bank by handing in a relevant code which can be downloaded from the Almawelcome service (via Internet) or supplied by the Students’ Registry Office.
Upon the payment, the student shall sign in the enrolment application form and hand it in to the Students’Registry Office of the relevant Faculty together with a copy or receipt of the stay permit issued by one of the authorized postal offices testifying the request of application to the stay permit.
While waiting for the issue of the stay permit, the enrolment is carried out with reserve until the delivery of a valid copy of the stay permit. In case of a notification by the Italian Police Authority (upon the request of the University) testifying the rejection of the application, the enrolment shall be automatically deleted.
At the enrolment, the student shall receive a university badge to access all University services.
The applicants for whom the access requisites have not been testified yet shall be admitted to the enrolment but with reserve; any limitation shall be removed upon the positive assessment of the degree/certificate/diploma by the relevant degree programme board (or delegate lecturers).
Students who have passed the Italian language test but not entering the reserved share shall have the possibility of applying for the "re-assignation" to another degree programme with posts still available within the University of Bologna or to another Italian university.
For the academic year 2011/2012, the procedure of "re-assignation" shall take place on October 18, 2011. For further information, please refer to the Students’ Registry Office of the relevant Faculty.
