Who They Are
List of countries in the European Union and countries with equivalence to European Union states. Other situations of equivalence with Italian citizens.
European Union citizens are those people who belong to countries in the European Union (E.U.): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary.
Citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and San Marino have equivalent status to community citizens for the purpose of entrance to University courses.
Foreign citizens who hold the following documents and qualifications have equivalent status to Italian citizens for the purpose of entrance to university courses: residence card, residence permit issued for employed or independent work, for family reasons, for political asylum, for humanitarian asylum, for religious reasons, or those people who have been legally residing for at least one year and hold an academic qualification awarded in Italy.
Foreign citizens, wherever they are resident, holding the following academic qualifications have equivalent status to Italian citizens for the purpose of entry to university courses: final diplomas issued by Italian schools abroad or by foreign or international schools in Italy or abroad, that are subject to bilateral agreements or special norms for the recognition of academic qualifications, and satisfy general entrance conditions (see article 26, Law 189 of 30 July 2002).
The following people have equivalent status to Italian citizens for the purpose of entry to university courses: political refugees and staff of foreign Embassy-Consular offices and international bodies with offices in Italy (accredited by the Italian State or the Holy See) and dependent family members, limited to spouses and children.
