Learning outcomes

Students must attend some seminars chosen from a list of seminars and workshops organized by the School of Economics. Some of them can be self-organized by students on topics of their interest. Seminars account for 3 ECTS, provided that the student writes a short report on the content of the attended seminars.
At the end of the seminars the student is able to identify and evaluate the main topics of current research in the tourism field, and to deepen the analysis through brief essays.

Course contents

In the Academic Year 2013-14, seminars are organized in the first semester. The provisional programme is the following:

A. Valentina Bazzarin (University of Bologna) - (S)mar(t)keting: Web marketing, social media marketing, web reputation and digital literacy

Abstract: According to European Digital Agenda Action 59 "Prioritise digital literacy and skills in the 'New skills for jobs' flagship", these seminars are planned to promote graduate students empowerment trough digital literacy. In particular seminars' content is focused on personal web reputation, engagement of relevant communities, and planning of web marketing or social-media marketing strategies.

There will be 4 seminars of 3 hours each, once a week in October 2013

Fourth seminar - Monday, October the 28th, 14:00-17:00: Red Lab

  1. Case histories of social media marketing aimed to promote tourism

  2. Discussion of students' project


B. Matthias Fuchs (Mid-Sweden University) - Engineering the Knowledge Destinations in the era of e-Tourism.

After introducing into major structural and behavioral changes in the tourism domain provoked by ICTS, the concept of the knowledge destination is presented. Based on the concept of the "Learning Destination" it can be shown, how both, knowledge creation and knowledge application is effectively supported by methods of Business Intelligence (BI). Finally, the first BI-based Destination Management Information System, prototypically implemented in the Swedish tourism destination Are (DMIS-Are), is demonstrated.

Teaching methods

Seminars, activity in the laboratory

Assessment methods

Students should attend at least 5 out of the 8 seminars offered in 2013-14. Attendance will be checked through identification and signature. To gain the 3 ECTS students should write a short essay on one of the topics covered in the seminars, under the guidance of one of the invited speakers. Evaluation will be on a PASS / FAIL basis.
