Course contents

1. DEMOGRAPHIC METHODS

Recapitulation of the sources of demographic data in Italy since Unification up to present times. Recall of some basic concepts of demographic analysis: definition of crude demographic rates (birth rates, death rates, marriage rates, migratory rates); natural growth rate, migratory growth rate, overall growth rate.

The age distribution of demographic events: age specific fertility rates and mortality rates; age and sex demographic structure; the graphical representation of demographic events, demographic rates and other demographic concepts (Lexis diagram); standardization methods; standardized indices of fertility.

The definition of intensity and tempo of the demographic phenomena. Cohort and period measures of the intensity.

The life table and its elements: the construction of complete and abridged life tables. The measure of infant mortality. 

Fertility measure and reproduction indices (the difference between gross and net demographic reproduction).

Nuptiality indices: mean age at marriage, intensity of nuptiality.

Techniques for the demographic forecasts.

2. TOPICS OF DEMOGRAPHIC HISTORY

The evolution of the European populations in the long run and the regulatory mechanisms of the historical communities and of the contemporary populations. Patterns and timing of the demographic transition in Europe and in the contemporary populations (in low developed countries).
